Service overview

What's involved in plumbing.

Plain-English breakdown, so you know exactly what you're paying for and why it matters before we set foot on site.

What it is

Domestic plumbing repairs and installations, leak detection and repair, tap and mixer replacements, toilet and cistern works, full bathroom re-pipes, hot and cold mains alterations, outside taps, washing machine and dishwasher plumbing, immersion and stored hot water faults, and pressure or flow issues.

Who it's for

Homeowners with a leak they've been mopping for a week, anyone renovating a kitchen or bathroom, landlords needing reliable repairs without callbacks, and renovators wanting copper re-pipes done properly behind the plaster.

When you need it

Water under floorboards or on ceilings; taps dripping past a washer change; toilets that run continuously or flush slowly; cold mains pressure that won't fill the bath; or any visible weeping joint that's been 'sorted' twice already.

Why it matters

Hidden leaks ruin floors, joists and ceilings, a same-day repair turns into a major joist replacement once dry rot sets in. Solid plumbing is mostly invisible, which is why it pays to use a tradesman who solders properly, pressure-tests every line, and stands behind their work in writing.

The cost of doing nothing

What goes wrong when this is ignored.

Most plumbing disasters are repeat repairs, a slow leak fixed once with PTFE tape and a prayer, becoming a ceiling-down emergency at 2am six months later.

Risks of waiting

  • Slow leaks under sinks and behind tiles cause black mould, rotten chipboard and (worst case) ceiling collapse, often invisible until the damage is done.
  • Frozen and burst mains pipes from poor insulation can release 400+ litres of water before the supply is isolated, ruining floors, kitchens and ground-floor ceilings.
  • Failed push-fit fittings behind plaster mean ripping out finished walls to remediate, a cheap fitting turns into a major tiling and decorating bill.
  • Frozen and uninsulated condensate or external pipework can split on the first hard freeze, releasing water inside walls before anyone notices.

Common mistakes

  • Wrapping PTFE around a compression olive (instead of using the olive itself), it'll weep the moment temperature changes.
  • Using push-fit everywhere because it's faster, fine in accessible loft runs, risky behind plaster or under floors.
  • Replacing a tap without isolating the supply properly, half-turn isolators that are seized cause more floods than the original leak.
  • Ignoring a dripping overflow on a cold-water storage tank, it usually means a stuck float valve that ends in a kitchen ceiling collapse.

Leak detection and repair, without ripping the house apart

We trace leaks using thermal imaging, acoustic listening discs and dye testing before opening up floors or ceilings, so we know exactly which board to lift. Most domestic leaks fall into a few categories: failed compression olives on radiator tails, pinholed copper on old hot supplies (especially in hard-water Kent), failed push-fit O-rings behind tiles, and overflowing F&E tanks in lofts. Each has a tell, and a permanent fix that doesn't involve crossing fingers.

Bathroom installations and full re-pipes

When we re-pipe a bathroom we usually run new 22mm cold and 22mm hot in copper from the mains tee or hot cylinder, reduced to 15mm at the appliance with proper isolators on every outlet. Soldered ends-feed and capillary joints behind tiles; compression at accessible junctions for future serviceability. Wastes run in 40mm or 50mm solvent-welded plastic with the correct falls (18mm/m minimum), bossed cleanly into the soil stack rather than tee'd off horizontally.

Hot water systems, unvented & vented cylinders

We install and service unvented cylinders (Megaflo, Telford) under our G3 ticket, plus traditional vented cylinders with cold storage in the loft. Stored cylinders get yearly anode checks, T&P valve discharge tests and immersion replacements where needed. Gas appliance work, boiler installs, services and certification, is handled by a Gas Safe registered partner, not by Spectrum directly.

Mains pressure, flow and water softening

Kent water is hard, 280–320ppm calcium carbonate in most TN postcodes. Untreated, it scales kettles, blocks shower heads and ruins hot water cylinders within 5–8 years. We install proper salt-based softeners (Harvey, Kinetico, Tapworks) on a dedicated bypass with a drinking-water spur at the kitchen tap, plus inline scale inhibitors on heating circuits to protect cylinders and pipework.

Outside taps, washing machines and appliance plumbing

Outside taps are fitted with a dedicated isolator inside, a self-draining bib tap outside, and a double-check valve where regs require. Washing machine and dishwasher plumbing runs to manufacturer height with proper standpipe falls, preventing the slow drain and gurgle that wrecks bearings over time.
